Amelia whispered and I knew then that she was scared. Making a decision, I wrapped her in my arms, blanket included. “Keep the blanket over your head. I’ve got you.” She didn’t fight me, her body pressing into mine and I rushed out of her cabin and onto the front porch.

The rain wasn’t going to let up soon, so I ran across the yard as quickly as I could. The blankets were wet by time I reached my porch, but when I set Amelia down on the couch and unwrapped her, she was dry. Good.

“Are you hungry? Thirsty?” I knelt down in front of her, not sure what she wanted me to do. She flicked her eyes towards me once and then pulled the blankets back over her, lying down on the couch. Within a few minutes, she was snoring. She must have been exhausted, after being so scared.
